Background

1991: Plans for the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group (CSzG) began when Iain Chalmers, Muir Gray and others supported Clive Adams' efforts to investigate the formation of the group by publishing papers and testing the enthusiasm for the idea amongst colleagues.

1993: Clive had gathered sufficient support within the subspeciality, and was mandated to establish a Cochrane Group which focused on the care of people with schizophrenia.

1994: By April it was possible to apply for the registration of the Schizophrenia Group with the Cochrane Collaboration. A small but crucial grant from the Mental Health Foundation allowed an administrator to be employed, and the first systematic review was produced shortly afterwards. The contributions of Dr Jeremy Anderson and Professor Jair Mari (two of the founding editors) and Rachel Lee and Rochelle Seifas (Managing Editors) were invaluable in the early days of the group.

The Group's Register of Trials was also instigated in 1994 with the help of a small grant from the Oxford Regional Health Authority. This important painstaking groundwork was supported by Iain Chalmers, Michael Gelder, Muir Gray, a number of local medical students and considerable goodwill on the part of the library staff of the Warneford Hospital in Oxford, especially Doreen Ledgard.

Present day: The current work of the CSzG is co-ordinated by the members of the Editorial Base team.
